John Torgenson

Managing Partner

John Torgenson is honored to stand up for good people who are hurt. For John, this isn’t just a career—it’s personal. From defending his family members against playground bullies to fighting insurance companies for injured clients, John has always made it his mission to protect those who need an advocate most.

A Fighter From the Beginning

Growing up in St. George, Utah as part of a Mexican-American family, John learned early what it meant to face adversity. His father Fernando, adopted by the Torgenson family at age 12, worked as a highly skilled tradesman for over 40 years while showing John what real dedication looks like. His mother Karen, taught John and his siblings to stand up for themselves and others who were being bullied.

These lessons proved necessary when John and other family members faced discrimination in their community. In second grade, John found himself and other family members being physically harassed by other kids. John leaped into action. His mother’s response—taking them to each bully’s home to confront the parents—showed John how to challenge injustice directly.

From Notre Dame to Fighting for the Underdog

After high school, John attended the University of Utah, graduating in 2001. Despite the skeptics, he applied to only one law school—his dream school, Notre Dame—and was accepted, graduating with honors in 2004.

This achievement represented not only personal success but also validation for his entire family. John recalls his father crying only twice: once when
discussing the impact that his parents (John’s Grandparents) made upon his life by choosing to adopt him, and again when John’s Notre Dame acceptance letter arrived.

John began his legal career at Fennemore Craig, the oldest law firm in Arizona. While he was grateful for the training he received there, he soon realized that his true calling was helping vulnerable people rebuild their lives after injuries.

John found himself wanting to protect and help victims, regardless of which side they were on. This realization led him to establish Torgenson Law, which will soon celebrate its 15th anniversary.

A Personal Approach to Personal Injury

What sets John apart is how deeply he invests in his clients’ wellbeing beyond legal representation. When a young man named Jordan was killed in a car accident, John personally helped the mother with key expenses until the case was settled, and select an urn to hold some of her son’s ashes.

When Judith Walkers’ son was killed by a tractor-trailer driver, John helped her pack up her son’s apartment and provided emotional support through late-night phone calls.

For John, each case represents a human being who needs help—not just a file number or settlement amount. He describes himself as an empath who “soaks in deeply” his clients’ pain: “I live, breathe, and die in my clients’ cases.”

This philosophy extends to the entire firm, where clients receive personal cell phone numbers, individualized texting systems for immediate communication, and even handcrafted gifts made by John’s father.

Torgenson Law reached out to a deserving client and her family with a “Christmas in July.” This was an unfortunate case of catastrophic injuries and little to no insurance money available.

Community Involvement and Balanced Perspective

John maintains balance through civic engagement. He has served as a board member at Kids @ Core, coached middle school football at St. Francis Xavier, actively participates in the Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Association, and serves meals to the homeless at Andre House in Phoenix.

Drawing on his 22 years as a licensed Grand Canyon River Guide, John brings unique perspective to his practice.

Being licensed to practice in the State of Arizona, the U.S. Federal District Court of Arizona, and the 9th Federal Circuit Court of Appeals gives John the credentials to fight effectively. His experience working both defense and plaintiff sides provides valuable insight into how to efficiently advance his clients’ interests.

Community event with children

Torgenson Law was proud to distribute over 200
backpacks to local students for the new school year. The goal was to help reduce the financial burden that school supplies can place on parents.

Proud to be a Personal Injury Lawyer

John is 100% devoted to fighting insurance companies and corporations on behalf of good people who are hurt. John wears his title proudly. To him, it means taking vulnerable, broken people at the darkest times in their lives and helping them rebuild piece by piece.

When insurance companies clock out at 5 PM, John’s work continues. His tireless work ethic, learned from watching his father, combines with the unbending will inherited from his mother to take on well-financed opponents. At Torgenson Law, “It’s Personal” isn’t just a tagline—it’s a promise that your fight is John’s fight, from the first call until justice is served.

Attorney certification

On October 26th, 2004, John Torgenson earned this certificate qualifying him to practice as an Attorney and Counselor in the Arizona Supreme Court.
