Got Into An Accident With An Uber? Don’t Panic, Follow These Steps

May 6, 2016

If you have been following this blog, as you should, then you know that we have put an emphasis on driver safety and steps to take decreasing the chances of personal injury. This week we want to put a spotlight on ride sharing, such as Uber and Lyft, and things to know if you happen to get into an accident.

Uber and Lyft drivers are not professional drivers who know what they are doing at all times.  Ride sharing drivers are just as likely to get involved in a car accident as you are. A negligent Uber driver is just as dangerous as a normal driver.

If you find yourself in an accident with an Uber or Lyft driver there is no difference in how you respond to the situation then if you were in a normal accident. Because the drivers are “independent contractors”, Uber or Lyft are not liable for their drivers’ behavior. If you get in an accident follow these tips:

Get Everyone’s Information. If you get into an accident with an Uber or Lyft driver be sure to write down everyone’s information, driver and passengers. Though you may have gotten into an accident with the driver you still have to consider the insurance of any passengers in the car.

Find Witnesses. Like any accident it is important to have the information and statements of any witnesses to the accident. This will only help your case and prove that the Uber or Lyft driver was negligent.

Take Photos. Take as many photos of the damages as possible from all different angles for your own evidence of what happened.

Call The Authorities. It’s important for the accident to be documented on the police record for evidence that the accident actually occurred. This is a safer way of dealing with any accidents then on your own.

Go To The Doctor. Take a visit to your doctor’s office as soon as possible and be sure you did not suffer any injuries from the accident. It’s better to be safe then sorry and in case you file a personal injury suit it’s important to have your medical records document your pain.
